Are you considering homeschooling this fall? Are you new to homeschooling? This is the time of year when families start making decisions for fall regarding education. I thought I would post some great information that our director prepared for families that are considering homeschooling for the first time.
Below is information that will help you with the questions regarding the NC guidelines and laws.
Two resources that are very helpful for those who are considering homeschooling are the NCHE and HSLDA web sites. They each have a section of their web sites dedicated to just beginning homeschooling. NCHE’s is particularly about homeschooling in NC http://nche.com/hrg andhttp://nche.com/how_to I have also found the HSLDA web site extremely helpful for new homeschoolers: http://www.youcanhomeschool.org/starthere/default.asp?bhcp=1 They also have sections on the early years (preschool through middle school)http://www.hslda.org/earlyyears/default.asp and for high school http://www.hslda.org/highschool/default.asp
Also on the WNC Homeschooler’s Yahoo web page, in the LINKS section there is a folder called Finding Out About Homeschooling http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WNC-Homeschoolers/links/Finding_Out_About_Ho_001075150140/ that has links to many helpful places (those listed above and others) included the DNPE site. You would need to join the free group to access them.
I would like to add something on a personal note. I really feel like a support group should be high on your list of things to find if you are new to homeschooling. (It doesn’t even have to be our group.) A support group is a constant resource for you. There are usually educational activities that you and your children can get involved in as well as a chance to meet and talk with other like-minded families. I can honestly say that the friendships that I have gained as a mom are invaluable. Whether I go to Mugs n Muffins on a Tuesday morning, a field trip to the dairy farm, or our group skating party, I always know that if I happen to be struggling that day all I need to do is look to my right or to my left and I will find someone to talk to. It is also very important to remember that you don’t need to feel like you have to do everything that the group (whichever group you choose) is doing. It is very easy to get too involved. It is okay if your kindergartener only takes 2 classes that are offered and not 4. It is okay if you don’t go on every field trip. It is okay to stay at home.
We have a great group of families at BBC. I have the privilege of being on the team and helping with the Enrichment Classes. We would love to have you join us and the other families here as we walk this homeschooling road together.
Thanks for reading.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thess. 5:11
